The Rare Books Group caters for staff working with early printed books, and historic/special collections. Its membership is drawn from all types of libraries and information centres throughout Ireland.
The group is mainly concerned with the care, preservation and management of early printed books and historic/special collections. It cultivates an awareness of the importance of our valuable cultural and heritage collections. The group organises a full-day annual seminar every November, with a programme of papers on a particular theme. In recent years these themes have encompassed the history of the Irish book trade, conservation, binding and the digitisation of special collections. The group also holds annual workshops, and organises visits to libraries and other places of interest, including a full-day outing in early summer.
The RBG Committee comprises representatives from a wide range of libraries around the country, all of them sharing an enthusiasm for early printed books, and historic and special collections.
